Fees & reimbursementsNEWS
TikTok Shop quietly moved its US referral fee to 8%. Your first full settlement under it lands this month.
Trade coverage dates the increase from 6% to 8% on most non-food US categories to August 4, 2026 — months after the promotional 1.8% rate ended in January. Two points reads small; on a thin-margin unit it is a fifth of the profit. The math, the conflicting sources, and the three checks to run in Seller Center this week.

US referral: 6% → 8% on most non-food categories (August 4, 2026, trade reports)
Key takeaways
- Trade coverage dates an increase in TikTok Shop's standard US referral fee from 6% to 8% for most non-food categories to August 4, 2026, with beauty and personal care above that — two trade publications carry it and TikTok has issued no press release; the second move of the year, after the promotional 1.8% rate ended in January.
- Published fee guides now openly conflict: several 2026 guides still describe a flat 6% for US sellers. The only number that settles the question is the referral line in your own settlement statement.
- Two points is not small at the margin: on a $25 unit it is $0.50 per unit; if that unit netted $2.50 before the change, the same unit now nets $2.00 — a 20% profit cut from a 'two point' revision.
- The fee base matters as much as the rate: TikTok's US documentation computes the referral fee on the buyer-paid amount plus platform-funded discounts, excluding tax — and on returns, an administration fee of 20% of the referral fee (capped at $5 per SKU) is retained.
- The structural costs did not move: creator commissions you set yourself and Fulfilled by TikTok's flat-dollar fulfillment still sit on top, which is why the honest all-in rate was never the headline number.
TikTok Shop spent two years marketing the cheapest headline commission of any major US marketplace. In January the promotional rate went; in August, per recent reporting, the standard rate followed it upward. Neither move was loud. Both compound. If you priced your catalog against 6% — or worse, against the introductory rate — you are now running a P&L that belongs to a previous quarter.
01What changed, and what the sources say
The sequence: the platform ended its promotional 1.8% commission in January 2026, then on August 4, 2026 raised the standard referral fee for most US non-food categories from 6% to 8%, with beauty and personal care above that.
The honest complication — and the reason this guide exists rather than a one-line note — is that the published record currently disagrees with itself. Several substantial 2026 guides, including ones reviewed against TikTok’s own US seller documentation this summer, still describe a flat 6% for most categories with select jewelry lower. Our TikTok Shop fee page has carried that disagreement in its contested-figures section for weeks; the weight of recent, dated reporting has now shifted to 8%.
What that conflict means operationally is simple: treat 8% as the working figure, and confirm against your own settlement statement rather than any published table — including ours.
02The margin math, worked
Scale it: at 1,000 units a month, the same catalog loses $500 a month to a revision most sellers will first notice as an unexplained dip in their settlement. And the referral line is only the anchor. The rest of the stack is unchanged and unchanged is not cheap: creator commissions of 10–30% that you set yourself, and Fulfilled by TikTok’s flat per-unit fulfillment — at roughly $2.86–$4.28 depending on basket — which takes about 9% of a $40 sale but roughly a quarter of a $15 one. Cheap products did not work at 6%. They work less at 8%.
Two mechanics in the fee base deserve their own line:
| Mechanism | Reported behavior |
|---|---|
| Platform-funded promos | Referral fee computed on the buyer-paid amount plus the platform-funded discount, excluding tax — the subsidy is reimbursed, but the fee applies to the pre-discount value |
| Returns | Referral fee reverses, but an administration fee of 20% of the referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU, is retained — and at 8%, that 20% is a bigger number too |

03What to do — this week, in Seller Center
Read the settlement, not the guides. Open your most recent settlement statement and read the actual referral percentage per order. Given the conflicting published record, your own statement is the only authoritative source for your account and categories.
Re-run the top of the catalog at 8%. Put your five biggest SKUs through the margin calculator with the new referral line plus your real FBT and creator-commission figures. Any SKU whose net falls below your floor gets a price revision or a delist decision now — before Q4 volume locks the mistake in at scale.
Recheck co-funded promotions. If you run platform-funded deals, remember the fee base includes the pre-discount value. A promo that penciled at 6% on the discounted price is doubly wrong at 8% on the full one.
The wider lesson is the one this site is built on: headline rates are marketing, settlement statements are accounting, and the distance between them is where margins go to die. The full TikTok Shop fee page carries every line — dated, sourced, and updated as the record moves.
Open Seller Center, Finance, and read the referral line on your first settlement after August 4. That number, not this article, is your rate — and if it still says 6%, your category was not in the first wave.
Frequently asked
Is the 8% rate confirmed?
Recent dated reporting places the increase at August 4, 2026 for most non-food US categories, but several published guides still state 6%, and category exceptions exist in both directions. Treat 8% as the working figure and confirm the actual line in your own settlement statement.
How much does two points actually cost?
Two percent of the sale price, on every unit. On a $25 unit that is $0.50; if the unit previously netted $2.50, the same unit now nets $2.00 — a 20% cut in profit from a two-point fee change.
Did anything else in the stack change?
The structural layers — creator commissions you set and Fulfilled by TikTok fulfillment — are unchanged by this move. But both sit on top of the referral fee, which is why the all-in cost of an affiliate-driven sale was never the headline rate.
What should I check first?
Your most recent settlement statement, line by line. Then your five highest-volume SKUs through a unit model at 8%. Then any platform co-funded promotions, because the fee base includes the pre-discount value.
