From day 181 to month 15: the sell-down, liquidate or remove decision at every step of the aged-inventory ladder
The storage guide explains the aged-inventory surcharge. This one decides. At each band from day 181 to the new 15-month tier, here is the monthly cost of holding one unit, the cost of removing it, and the discount at which selling it down beats both.

Decision points: day 150, day 240, day 330, month 12
Key takeaways
- The aged-inventory surcharge is assessed on the 15th of each month on units that have been in the network 181 days or more, per cubic foot or per unit, whichever is greater. For 2026 Amazon raised the per-unit minimum on the 271–365-day bands to $0.30 and added a 15-month-plus tier at $7.90 per cubic foot or $0.35 per unit.
- The decision is not 'is this unit old' but 'is the next month of holding it worth more than the cost of getting rid of it'. That comparison changes at each band, and it changes again in October when the base rate triples.
- Removal (return to you) costs a per-unit fee that rises with size; disposal is cheaper; liquidation via Amazon's program pays you a fraction of value but ends storage immediately. Each has a break-even against another month of surcharge.
- Four calendar decision points: day 150 (before the surcharge starts), day 240 (before the $3.80 band), day 330 (before $4.20 and the 12-month step), and month 12 (before the 15-month tier at $7.90).
- Pull the Inventory Age report; do not estimate age from your purchase orders. Amazon's clock starts at receipt, and it is Amazon's clock that bills.
The storage guide explains the aged-inventory surcharge. This page is for a different moment: you’re looking at a unit that has sat in the network for 200 days and you have to decide. Hold, discount, liquidate, or pull it. The answer at day 200 is not the answer at day 280, and neither is the answer at month 13.
01The ladder, as a monthly cost per unit
Take one standard-size unit of 0.5 cubic feet. Monthly cost to hold it, base rate plus surcharge, off-peak and in Q4:
| Age | Surcharge (per cu ft / per-unit min) | Off-peak monthly cost | Q4 monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–180 days | none | $0.39 | $1.20 |
| 181–210 | $0.50 | $0.64 | $1.45 |
| 211–240 | $1.00 | $0.89 | $1.70 |
| 241–270 | $1.50 | $1.14 | $1.95 |
| 271–300 | $3.80 / $0.30 | $2.29 | $3.10 |
| 301–330 | $4.00 / $0.30 | $2.39 | $3.20 |
| 331–365 | $4.20 / $0.30 | $2.49 | $3.30 |
| 12–15 months | $6.90 / $0.30 | $3.84 | $4.65 |
| 15 months and over | $7.90 / $0.35 — new for 2026 | $4.34 | $5.15 |
Base rates: $0.78 per cubic foot off-peak, $2.40 in October–December. Surcharge assessed on the 15th on units at that age on that date. A unit that reaches day 181 on the 14th pays the full month.
02The three exits, and what each costs
Removal order (return to you). A per-unit removal fee by size tier and weight — in the low single dollars for standard-size units on the 2026 card, more for bulky; the exact figure appears when you create the order — plus the time to process. Priced at the moment the order is placed. You get the unit back to re-list elsewhere, bundle, or sell through another channel.
Disposal order. Cheaper than removal per unit — Amazon destroys or donates. You recover nothing but you stop the meter.
Liquidation (FBA Liquidations). Amazon sells the unit to a liquidator and pays you a percentage of the average selling price — typically a small fraction. Storage stops when the liquidation order is accepted. The recovery is low; the point is speed and zero handling.
Sell-down. A coupon, price cut or deal that moves the unit before the next 15th. It costs the discount plus the peak fulfillment fee if you are in the window, but the unit produces revenue rather than a fee.
Seller Central > Inventory > FBA Inventory > select units > Create removal order (choose Return, Dispose or Liquidate). Seller Central > Reports > Fulfillment > Inventory > Inventory Age for the age buckets and the estimated surcharge per FNSKU.
03The break-even at each band
The rule that makes the decision mechanical:
hold another month if: expected sale probability this month × contribution per sale
> monthly holding cost at the NEXT band
otherwise: take the cheapest exit
Worked example, the same 0.5 cu ft unit, $20 price, $6 contribution before storage, off-peak:
| Age today | Holding cost next month | Sale probability needed to justify holding |
|---|---|---|
| Day 200 | $0.89 | 15% |
| Day 260 | $2.29 | 38% |
| Day 320 | $2.49 | 42% |
| Day 350 | $3.84 | 64% |
| Month 14 | $4.34 | 72% |
Read the right-hand column against your actual sell-through. A SKU selling 10% of its remaining stock per month is worth holding at day 200 and is a liquidation candidate by day 260. In Q4, add roughly $0.81 to every holding cost and the thresholds move up by 15 to 20 points — which is why the decision belongs in September.

04The four calendar decision points
- Day 150. The surcharge has not started. A 30-day sell-down still clears the unit before day 181 at $0 surcharge. This is the cheapest exit there is.
- Day 240. The next band is $3.80 per cubic foot — the ladder’s biggest single step. A unit you cannot sell in 30 days at day 240 should be on a removal or liquidation order.
- Day 330. Two steps ahead: $4.20, then $6.90 at twelve months. If the sell-down has not worked in five months it is not going to work in the sixth.
- Month 12. The last cheap decision before the 15-month tier. Anything reaching this point has cost you roughly $12 per cubic foot in surcharge alone; holding to month 15 adds another $20.
05What to do this week
- Run the Inventory Age report and add one column: days until the next band. Sort by it.
- Give every unit past day 150 a named exit and a date. “Watch it” is not an exit.
- Batch removal orders before September 30 if you are removing at all; processing times lengthen in Q4 and the base rate triples on October 1.
- Check the removal fee against liquidation recovery for units you would not re-list anyway. Paying to get back stock you will not sell is the most common error.
Run it on your own figures. The margin and break-even calculator returns contribution per unit; the dimensional weight calculator returns the cubic feet. Together they fill in the table above for your SKU.
Which band is your oldest SKU in right now? If you can’t answer without opening a report, open the report — the 15th is closer than it looks.
Frequently asked
What changed in the aged-inventory surcharge for 2026?
The per-unit minimum for the 271–365-day bands rose to $0.30, and a new tier for inventory aged 15 months or more was added at $7.90 per cubic foot or $0.35 per unit, whichever is greater. The entry point at day 181 and the intermediate bands did not change.
When is the surcharge assessed?
On the 15th of each month, on units that have reached the age band on that date, in addition to the monthly base storage fee.
Is removal or liquidation cheaper?
Per unit, liquidation usually costs nothing and pays a small recovery; removal costs a per-unit fee and returns the stock to you. If you would re-sell the unit elsewhere at a margin above the removal fee, remove it; if not, liquidate or dispose.
Does the surcharge stop when I place a removal order?
Storage and surcharge apply until the unit leaves the fulfillment center, so an order placed on the 10th that processes after the 15th is still charged that month. Place removal orders early in the month.
