Fees & reimbursements
Amazon's 2026 US fee changes: the $0.08 headline, and the seven other changes it did not mention
Fulfillment fees rose ~$0.08 per unit on January 15, 2026. The same cycle ended FBA prep, moved the low-inventory fee to FNSKU level, added a 15-month aged tier, delayed payouts to DD+7 from March 12 and layered a 3.5% fuel surcharge from April 17. The full calendar, sourced.

+$0.08/unit average (Amazon) + 3.5% fuel surcharge from 17 Apr 2026
Key takeaways
- Amazon's October 2025 letter put the 2026 US FBA increase at an average of $0.08 per unit, under 0.5% of a typical selling price, with no new fee types. Referral percentages and monthly storage base rates did not move. Both statements are true and both are incomplete.
- The same January 15 cycle recut fulfillment fees by price band (under $10, $10–$50, over $50), moved the low-inventory-level fee to seller-FNSKU level and into bulky tiers, added a 15-month aged-inventory tier, raised minimal-split placement fees ~$0.05 and restructured removal and disposal fees.
- Outside the letter: FBA prep and labeling services ended in the US on January 1; FBA payouts moved to delivery date plus seven days from March 12; a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge has applied to every US and Canada FBA and MCF fulfillment fee since April 17.
- Holiday peak fulfillment fees run October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, averaging $0.32 per unit over non-peak rates, with the 3.5% surcharge applied on top.
- Price is now an input to the fulfillment fee. A repricing decision that crosses $10 or $50 changes your FBA cost — automated repricers running on a fixed cost assumption are wrong by construction.
Eight cents. That was Amazon’s headline for 2026, announced October 15, 2025 and effective January 15, 2026. The letter is accurate about what it covers. It covers less than half of what changed. If you budgeted eight cents in January, you were paying materially more than that by May, and this guide lists every line that got you there.

02The average hides the spread
An $0.08 average across a catalog as wide as Amazon’s tells you almost nothing about your own SKU. Third-party readings of the published tables put the range considerably wider: one logistics provider reads small standard-size items priced $10–$50 at roughly +$0.25 per unit, small standard above $50 at around +$0.51, and items under $10 at about +$0.12; an agency reading groups it as around +$0.12 for small standard, +$0.08 for standard and roughly +$0.31 for larger items. The two disagree on how to slice it, which tells you to trust neither over your own data.
Then add the surcharge. On a $6.00 fulfillment fee, 3.5% is $0.21 — nearly three times the headline increase, and it applies to the peak fee too.
Seller Central > Reports > Fulfillment > Payments > Fee Preview gives the per-FNSKU fulfillment fee at current rates. Seller Central > Growth > Profit Analytics (the dashboard Amazon introduced with the 2026 update) shows unit economics per product with the fee lines separated. Pull both; estimates from articles, including this one, are orientation.

03The structural change nobody led with
Product price is now a factor in the FBA fulfillment fee. Previously the fee was a function of size tier and weight. Now the selling-price band enters the calculation.
Consequence: a price change can move your fulfillment cost. Raise a $49 item to $52 to protect margin and you may cross into the over-$50 band and take a second fee increase for your trouble. Discount a $10.49 item to $9.99 and it drops into Low-Price FBA rates, which average $0.86 lower — a promotion that partly pays for itself.
Repricing and fulfillment cost are now coupled. Any automated repricer running against a fixed fee assumption describes a cost structure that ended in January.
04Europe went the other way
For 2026 Amazon lowered European fees by an average of £0.15 / €0.17 per unit sold, through FBA parcel fulfillment reductions, wider Low-Price FBA eligibility and referral cuts in high-volume categories including clothing, home, grocery, vitamins and pet products. If you have been treating US and EU unit economics as one spreadsheet with a currency conversion, 2026 is the year that stops working.
05What is worth doing about it
- Repull fee data; do not estimate it. Fee Preview and Profit Analytics give per-ASIN figures including the surcharge.
- Model the surcharge as a multiplier on fulfillment, not a line item. 1.035 × fulfillment fee, including the peak fee from October 15.
- Check SKUs near the $10 and $50 boundaries. These are where the price-band logic bites and where a small repricing decision now has a second-order cost.
- Split fulfillment from referral in your margin model. They move independently and on different schedules.
- Re-plan cash for DD+7. A payout that used to arrive on shipment now arrives about a week after delivery; through Q4 that is a working-capital gap on top of peak fees.
- Do not restructure your catalog over eight cents. Treat the price-band coupling and the surcharge as the things to engineer around, and the eight cents as the thing to know.
Run it on your own figures. The margin and break-even calculator takes price, cost of goods, referral rate, fulfillment fee, returns and ad spend and returns net profit per unit, net margin and the maximum ACOS the product can carry. Nothing is stored and nothing leaves your browser.
Which of your SKUs sit within a dollar of $10 or $50? Start there. That is where 2026 changed the math, not in the eight cents.
Frequently asked
Did Amazon raise referral fees in 2026?
No. The January 2026 change applied to FBA fulfillment fees. Referral percentages were unchanged, as were monthly storage base rates.
When did the 2026 fees take effect?
Most changes on January 15, 2026, announced October 15, 2025. Prep services ended January 1, DD+7 payouts started March 12, the 3.5% fuel surcharge started April 17, and the peak fulfillment fee runs October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027.
Is the 3.5% surcharge a new fee type?
Amazon describes it as a surcharge on existing fulfillment fees rather than a new fee type, which is how the 'no new fee types' commitment and the surcharge coexist. Economically it is a 3.5% increase on every FBA and MCF fulfillment fee.
Does the increase apply to Multi-Channel Fulfillment?
MCF and Buy with Prime fees were also updated for 2026, and the 3.5% surcharge applies to MCF as well as FBA. Check the MCF rate card for your size tiers rather than assuming the FBA figure carries over.
Why do published estimates of the increase differ so much?
Because they slice the fee tables differently — by size tier, by price band, or by a blend. The only figure that describes your catalog is the one in your own Fee Preview report.
