What a cookie is
A small text file placed on your device by a website. Similar technologies — local storage, pixels, tags — do comparable things and are covered by this policy wherever they are used.

Third parties
Some cookies are set by companies other than us — an advertising network, an analytics provider, or an embedded service. We do not control what those companies do with the data they collect, and their own policies govern it. This site carries no affiliate or referral links, so no cookie is set here to track a commission; see how this site is funded.
Your choices
Where a consent mechanism is presented — for readers in regions whose law requires one — your choice is recorded and can be changed at any time through that mechanism.
Independently of anything this site does, your browser can block or delete cookies. Every major browser has this in its settings, usually under privacy. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working.
How long cookies last
Some cookies are deleted the moment you close your browser; these are session cookies, and they generally exist to keep a page working while you are on it. Others persist for a set period so that a preference — a consent choice, for instance — does not have to be collected again on every visit. The retention period is set by whoever placed the cookie, which for third-party cookies means the third party rather than us.
What we do not do
This site does not sell personal data, and it does not use cookies to build a profile of you for resale. Where advertising is served, the network's own targeting practices apply and are described in that network's policy — but the arrangement is that they serve advertising, not that we hand over a reader database.
Changes
This policy changes when what the site uses changes. The privacy policycovers personal data more broadly, and the terms cover use of the site.
