Shipping & logistics

Six published sources give six different ocean freight rates. The mode decision is still easy.

LCL is quoted between $80 and $400 per cubic meter depending on who you ask. Air runs $4 to $12 per kg. The rates move constantly — but the thresholds that decide which mode to use barely move at all.

The figure this guide is about, drawn from the sources listed at the foot of the page.

Under 2 CBM air · 2–15 LCL · above 15 FCL

Key takeaways

  • Published LCL rates range from $80 to $400 per cubic meter across six 2026 sources, and FCL from $1,500 to $7,425 for a container. Freight pricing is volatile and dated quotes are worthless.
  • The volume thresholds are far more stable than the rates: reported guidance is air or express below about 2 CBM, LCL between 2 and 15, and FCL above roughly 15.
  • Air is at 4 to 6 times the cost of sea and 3 to 5 times faster. Sea is 80% to 85% cheaper per kg.
  • Air charges on chargeable weight — the greater of actual and volumetric weight — which penalizes bulky, light goods specifically.
  • The split shipment is the technique worth knowing: a small air batch to start selling while the ocean bulk is in transit, which protects rank and avoids a launch stockout.

Freight guides are written by freight forwarders and they all quote rates. Those rates were correct on the day they were written and are a starting point for a conversation now, nothing more.

What does not move much is the arithmetic that tells you which mode to use.

01The rates, and how far apart they are

ModeReported 2026 figures
Express courier$6–$12 per kg · $8–$14 per kg · 3–7 days
Air freight$4–$9/kg · $4.85–$9/kg · $5.50–$9/kg · $5–$12/kg all-in · $7.40/kg (July 2026, 1,000kg+ to LA/NY/Miami)
Ocean LCL$110–$150/CBM · $130/CBM · $80–$220/CBM West Coast · $150–$400/CBM
Ocean FCL$1,500–$3,500 (20ft WC) · $1,900–$3,200 (40ft WC) · $2,000–$4,500 (40ft) · $2,500–$6,500 · $5,400–$6,600 (20GP, July 2026)

The FCL spread is more than fourfold. One source’s July 2026 figures are roughly double another’s March 2026 figures for comparable containers.

Both can be right. Reporting names Red Sea routing, Hormuz tensions and tariff-driven volatility as swinging rates and timing more than they used to. The lesson is not which number to use — it is that a freight rate has a shelf life of weeks.

02The thresholds, which do not move

Reported consistently, and this is the actionable part:

VolumeMode
Under ~2 CBMAir or express — below this, port and destination charges make LCL more expensive
2–15 CBMLCL
Above ~15 CBMFCL — one 40ft container is often cheaper than three LCL shipments of the same total volume, and faster

Why LCL loses at both ends. Below 2 CBM, the fixed origin and destination charges dominate. Above 15, you are paying consolidation and deconsolidation costs on volume that would fill a container — and waiting for both.

03Transit times

ModePort to port / directDoor to FBA
Express—3–7 days
Air2–3 days direct8–14 days
Ocean FCL14–22 days WC, 25–35 EC30–45 days
Ocean LCL10–17 to 25–40 days35–55 days

Note the LCL door-to-FBA figure. it at 35 to 55 days once supplier production slack, customs and prep are counted — longer than FCL, because consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination each add time.

And add Amazon’s own receiving: at 1 to 3 business days after delivery, which is not optional in your planning even though nobody quotes it.

04The chargeable weight trap

Air freight charges on chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight.

That formula punishes bulky, lightweight goods specifically. A carton of cushions and a carton of tools may weigh very differently and cost the same to fly, because the cushions are priced on the space they occupy.

Which means the air-or-sea question is not only about urgency. For dense, heavy, low-value goods, air is never viable. For light, compact, high-value goods, it is far more often viable than sellers assume.

05The split shipment

This is the technique worth taking from this guide.

Reported practice among experienced sellers: send a small air batch — one published estimate gives 100 to 300 kg — to start selling immediately, and the bulk by ocean to arrive three to four weeks later.

The air batch generates sales and reviews while the ocean batch is in transit. It costs slightly more than pure ocean shipping and it prevents a launch stockout.

Why that matters beyond the freight bill: as the listing guide covers, ranking erodes before a stockout actually happens, and the low-inventory-level fee charges you per unit while you are thin. A launch that runs out at week three has paid for the freight saving twice over.

The same logic applies to emergency restocks. Reporting is consistent that most experienced sellers use sea for regular replenishment and air selectively.

06What a rate quote leaves out

Ocean freight is one line on a bill with eight. One reported breakdown for a 1 CBM LCL shipment from Shenzhen:

ComponentReported
Ocean freight$80–$200
Origin handling$60–$120
Export customs$30–$60
Destination terminal handling$80–$150
Customs brokerage$80–$200
ISF filing$25–$50
Drayage to FBA$80–$200
Forwarder service fee$50–$150
Total$485–$1,130

Import duties are additional. So is any examination — see the customs holds guide.

That total against an ocean freight line of $80 to $200 is the reason a cheap freight quote and a cheap shipment are different things. See the forwarder guide.

07What to do

Calculate your CBM first. Volume decides the mode before price does. Length × width × height in meters, per carton, times carton count.

Get quotes dated this week. Anything older is a range, not a price.

Ask for the all-in number, not the freight line. The 1 CBM breakdown above is why.

Check chargeable weight before dismissing air. For compact, high-value goods the gap is smaller than the headline per-kg figures suggest.

Plan the split on launches and on anything with a stockout risk. Air batch to sell, ocean batch to sustain.

Add Amazon receiving to every timeline. One to three business days, after delivery, before anything sells.

Build freight into landed cost per unit, not as a shipment-level expense — see the landed cost guide.

Model it on your own figures. The cash flow planner maps deposit, balance, freight, receiving and payout onto a timeline so you can see the gap between money leaving and money returning. Nothing is stored and nothing leaves your browser.

Price your next shipment on all three modes with the same landed-cost sheet, including the cash tied up during ocean transit. The rate that looked cheapest rarely survives the third column.

Frequently asked

Should I use air or sea freight?

Sea for regular replenishment — at 80% to 85% cheaper per kg. Air for launches, emergency restocks, and light high-value goods. Volume decides first: under about 2 CBM, air or express is usually cheaper once port and destination charges are counted.

When does FCL beat LCL?

Above roughly 15 CBM. One 40ft container is often cheaper than three LCL shipments of the same total volume, and faster because there is no consolidation wait at origin.

What does ocean freight cost from China in 2026?

Published figures range from $80 to $400 per CBM for LCL and $1,500 to $7,425 for containers across six sources. The spread reflects real volatility — get a quote dated this week rather than using a published rate.

How long does it take door to FBA?

At 30 to 45 days for FCL, 35 to 55 for LCL, 8 to 14 for air and 3 to 7 for express — plus Amazon's own receiving of 1 to 3 business days after delivery.

What is chargeable weight?

The greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, used to price air freight. It penalizes bulky lightweight goods specifically, which is why air viability depends on density rather than only on urgency.

What is a split shipment?

Sending a small air batch — one published estimate gives 100 to 300 kg — to start selling while the bulk travels by ocean. It costs slightly more than pure ocean and prevents a launch stockout, which protects rank and avoids the low-inventory fee.
