Sellers pick a forwarder the way they pick a supplier: by quoting three and taking the cheapest number. The number they compare is the one that matters least.

For air, reported forwarder fees are typically bundled into an all-in per-kg rate of $5 to $12. For FCL, reported flat handling fees of $200 to $500 plus freight. Ask which structure you are being quoted in, because a per-kg air rate and an ocean freight line are not comparable numbers.

02DDP, and the question underneath it

Reported DDP pricing: $800 to $1,800 per CBM by sea, or $6 to $12 per kg by air, all-inclusive. The forwarder handles freight, customs, duties and last-mile delivery, and you pay one price.

The appeal is real — one price, one counterparty, no separate brokerage relationship, and reporting recommends it for sellers who do not want to manage customs.

The question it hides is the one from the Incoterms guide: whose name appears as importer of record on the CBP entry. DDP shifts cost and arrangement; whether it shifts the legal position depends on who is actually declared. Ask, in writing, before the first shipment. Your classification liability follows the declaration, not the invoice.

And a second question: what happens if duty rates move between quote and arrival. A DDP price contains an estimate of duty, and after two years of tariff changes that estimate has been wrong repeatedly.

03What a good forwarder does that a cheap one does not

Origin prep. Since Amazon ended US prep services on January 1, 2026, this changed from a convenience to a cost line. Reported origin services include FNSKU labeling, shipping labels and carton marks to Amazon specification, poly-bagging for suffocation warnings, product inspection before goods leave China, and consolidation from multiple suppliers into one shipment.

Do the arithmetic: origin prep at a reported rate against a domestic prep center at $0.35 to $2.00 per unit. For simple prep on a full container the origin option is usually cheaper; for complex prep or where you want to inspect the work, it is not.

Correct FBA routing. Reported middle-mile services check inventory into Amazon within 2 to 4 days. A forwarder unfamiliar with Amazon’s appointment and routing requirements produces delays that appear on no quote.

Consolidation. Combining goods from several suppliers into one shipment is what makes LCL economics work for a seller buying from multiple factories.

Compliance filing. ISF on ocean, and — since July 8, 2026 — CPSC certificate eFiling where applicable. Ask whether they handle it.

Quote structure

• Is this all-in or freight only? List every additional charge.
• What is not included? Duties, exam fees, demurrage, storage.
• How long is the quote valid? Rates move weekly.

Customs

• Whose name is on the entry as importer of record?
• Do you file ISF, and what happens if it is late?
• Do you handle PGA filings — CPSC, FDA — where my products need them?

Amazon specifics

• Do you prep at origin, and at what per-unit rate?
• Have you delivered to Amazon fulfillment centers before? Which?
• Who books the delivery appointment?
• What happens if Amazon refuses the shipment?

Failure handling

• What happens on a customs hold, and who pays?
• What is your liability for damage or loss?
• Do you carry cargo insurance, or do I arrange it?

That last group is the one that separates forwarders, and it is the one nobody asks until it matters.

05The peak season caveat

Reporting is direct: build buffer time into restocks, especially in Q3 and Q4 when delays are common.

Against the peak season guide and Amazon’s inbound deadlines, a two-week freight delay in October is not a freight problem — it is a stockout in the highest-demand weeks, at peak fulfillment rates, with capacity you may not be able to replace. Book earlier than the arithmetic says.

Quote all-in, not freight only, and require the component list.

Get quotes dated this week and treat validity as short.

Ask the importer-of-record question in writing on any DDP arrangement.

Price origin prep against domestic prep per SKU, not per shipment.

Check they have delivered to Amazon before. It is a routing and appointment competence, not a general freight one.

Ask what happens when it goes wrong before you need to know.
