04The two documents

Safety Data Sheet (SDS). A 16-section document prepared by the manufacturer describing chemical properties, hazards and handling requirements. Reported requirements: GHS-compliant, dated within five years, in the language of the target marketplace.

Exemption sheet. A simpler declaration, and the rule about it is strict. it is accepted for only two categories:

1. Battery and battery-powered products
2. Products confirmed to contain no harmful chemicals

Submitting an exemption sheet for anything outside those two will be rejected. That is a wasted cycle of several business days on a blocked ASIN.

07Importing dangerous goods

Documentation applies at two levels — Amazon’s internal requirements, and international transport and customs regulations. Reported requirements for the second:

08What to do

Build SDS requirements into supplier negotiations. Reporting recommends this specifically for private label: costing documentation in from the start is more efficient than scrambling after a flag. A supplier who cannot produce a GHS-compliant SDS is a supplier who will eventually block your ASIN.
