Scaling
TikTok told sellers their own shipping was ending, then withdrew it. Half the articles online never noticed.
The headline referral fee was 6% until August 4, 2026 and is 8% now — still the lowest of any major US marketplace. The effective rate on an affiliate-driven sale runs 20% to 30%. And the biggest operational question of 2026 has a settled answer: Seller Shipping survived, because TikTok withdrew the mandate on February 17.

8% headline since Aug 4 (6% before) · 20–30%+ effective on affiliate sales
Key takeaways
- US sellers can still use their own shipping. TikTok announced in January 2026 that Seller Shipping would end on March 31, then withdrew the plan in a February 17 email to merchants — confirmed by a TikTok spokesperson. Articles saying it ended on March 31 were written before the reversal or never updated.
- The referral fee is 8% on most non-food US categories since August 4, 2026 (6% before that) — still the lowest headline rate of any major US marketplace. Payment processing is included in the US; guides quoting a separate 1.02%–3.78% line describe other markets.
- The number that matters is the effective take-rate. With creator commissions at a 8% to 30% by category, published estimates put the all-in cost on an affiliate-driven sale at 20% to 30%+ of the sale price.
- Traffic is bought, not searched. Amazon supplies buyer intent; TikTok requires creator commissions and ad spend to generate discovery, which is why the fee comparison is misleading.
- FBT per-unit fees fall with basket size — from about $3.58 down to about $2.86 at four or more units — which makes bundle economics a direct profit lever.
TikTok Shop’s fee schedule looks like the cheapest place to sell in the United States. It is, on the line item everyone quotes, and that line item describes a minority of what selling there costs.
01The mandate that did not happen
In January 2026 TikTok told US sellers Seller Shipping was ending: existing sellers moving to TikTok-controlled logistics from February 25, hard cutoff March 31, and no independent option for anyone onboarding after February 9.
On February 17 TikTok withdrew it. The email to merchants said Seller Shipping remains unchanged, previously shared deadlines are not going into effect, and sellers should continue operating as usual. A TikTok spokesperson confirmed that all four options — Seller Shipping, Upgraded TikTok Shipping, Collections by TikTok and Fulfilled by TikTok — stay available. The reversal followed public pushback from beauty and enterprise brands and landed weeks after TikTok’s US joint venture closed on January 22.
Articles published after February 17 that still say independent shipping ended on March 31 were either written before the reversal or never updated. Two things about the reversal deserve attention anyway. The email said “at this time” — TikTok’s phrasing leaves the door open. And several accounts report that sellers who onboarded after February 9 are required to use TikTok Shop Logistics from their first order; if you are new, check your Seller Center fulfillment settings rather than assuming.
02The fee structure, and where guides still disagree
The referral fee. 8% for most non-food US categories since August 4, 2026, up from 6%; select beauty and electronics sub-categories sit higher and food lower. TikTok has published no press release; the rate on your own settlement statement is the record. Calculated on item price before shipping and tax.
Payment processing — three different answers:
| Source | Description |
|---|---|
| Canopy, TikAdSuite | The referral fee is a unified fee combining commission and processing; no separate transaction fee for US sellers |
| Dashboardly, FeesCal | Referral plus 1.02%–3.78% processing — a structure that describes other TikTok Shop markets, not the US |
| Darkroom | 8% referral plus $0.30 per transaction plus 2.0% processing |
The unified account appears in two sources describing it explicitly as what trips up sellers coming from Shopify or Etsy. The blended figures appear in two others. Check your own settlement statement, which resolves it in one look — see the reports guide.
Other charges on the Seller Center fee pages:
- Refund Administration Fee — on a return, TikTok refunds the referral fee but keeps 20% of it, capped at $5 per SKU
- Smart Promotion fee — one source reports 3.5% where Smart Promo is enabled, described as required for full ad eligibility
- Return shipping share — at 20% if your Shop Performance Score is 4 or above, otherwise 50%
- Withdrawal fees — $0.05 flat to a bank account, 0.9% via PayPal
- Hub Placement Fees — from about $0.31 per unit (seller-tool reading of the FBT schedule) where you do not ship to multiple regional fulfillment centers
- FBT Incident Fees — for non-compliant inbound: wrong labeling, incorrect routing, quantity discrepancies
That last pair should look familiar. It is the same structure as Amazon’s inbound placement and defect fees.

03The number that actually matters
Creator commissions. You set the rate. Ranges: near 0% to about 50%, with most sellers at 5% to 20%, and category medians of roughly 20% for beauty and supplements, 15% for fashion, 10% to 15% for home, 8% to 12% for electronics.
That is not an optional marketing expense. Reporting is consistent that TikTok’s discovery-driven model typically requires 10% to 20% in affiliate commissions to generate consistent traffic, while Amazon delivers built-in buyer intent through search.
Which produces the real comparison:
| Headline | Effective on an affiliate-driven sale | |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok Shop | 8% (6% before August 4, 2026) | 20%–30%+ |
| Amazon | 8%–15% | Referral plus advertising — see the PPC guide |
One source’s total platform-side cost on a $32 beauty SKU: roughly 35% to 40% of GMV before cost of goods and ad spend.
The honest framing: TikTok Shop is not cheaper than Amazon. It has a lower platform fee and a higher customer acquisition cost, and the total lands in a similar region. What differs is where the money goes and how predictable it is.
04Fulfillment
FBT — from about $3.58 per unit, falling to about $2.86 at four or more units. Another source gives $4.28 for lightweight single units; another gives pick-and-pack of $2.50 to $4.50 with storage at $0.75 to $1.50 per cubic foot.
The basket-size effect is the actionable part. Because per-unit fees fall with order size, bundle and basket optimization is a direct profit lever rather than a marketing preference. See the bundling guide — the same arithmetic, a different platform.
Free storage: 30 days in one source, 60 in another. Since june 16, 2025: FBT products automatically qualify for free shipping with no minimum order value.
Settlement timing is at roughly 15 days for standard sellers, 1 to 8 days for Star Shops, and up to 31 days for flagged accounts — which is a cash-cycle consideration alongside DD+7 if you sell on both.
05Where it fits
It works for visually demonstrable products with impulse appeal, in categories where creators are active — beauty, supplements, fashion, home. Reporting projects $23.4 billion US GMV for 2026, described as roughly 70% year-on-year growth.
It does not for low average order value. On a $12 item, a $4.28 fulfillment fee is a third of revenue before anything else. One source is direct that small sellers with low-priced products are especially exposed.
And it is a different business, not a second listing. Amazon rewards a listing that answers a search; TikTok rewards content that creates demand. A seller who copies listings across and waits will conclude the platform does not work.
06What to do
Confirm the shipping position in Seller Center first. The published record contradicts itself on the most consequential operational question.
Build the effective take-rate, not the referral fee: referral, plus processing if separate, plus expected affiliate commission, plus allocated ad spend, as one percentage.
Check your settlement statement to resolve whether processing is bundled.
Model at your actual average order value. The fixed fulfillment component is what decides viability at low price points.
Optimize basket size deliberately. FBT per-unit fees fall with units per order.
Negotiate creator commissions on volume and exclusivity rather than running open marketplace campaigns at premium rates.
Fix listing accuracy to reduce returns. Reporting attributes most TikTok Shop returns to mismatched expectations — size charts, color inconsistency, and overpromising in video. Returns cost twice: the lost sale and the retained refund administration fee.
Run it on your own figures. The margin and break-even calculator takes your price, cost of goods, referral rate, fulfillment fee, returns and ad spend and returns net profit per unit, net margin and the maximum ACOS the product can carry. Nothing is stored and nothing leaves your browser.
Open Seller Center, Finance, and read the referral line on your most recent settlement. Then open your fulfillment settings and confirm Seller Shipping is still listed. Those two screens settle every disagreement this article used to carry.
