Shipping Shopify orders from FBA stock: MCF's fee table, and the January increase nobody priced in
Multi-Channel Fulfillment lets the inventory already sitting in FBA ship your Shopify, eBay and Walmart orders. The January 2026 increase hit single-unit MCF orders four to five times harder than FBA's own base increase, and a 3.5% fuel surcharge landed on top in May. The convenience is real; so is the drift in what it costs.

+$0.35–$0.41 per single unit in January, +3.5% surcharge in May
Key takeaways
- MCF ships orders from Shopify, eBay, Walmart, WooCommerce or your own site out of the same inventory pool FBA uses. Pricing is per unit, set by size tier, weight, units per order and delivery speed, with no subscription or setup fee.
- Rates rose on January 15, 2026: most single-unit orders are up $0.35–$0.41 per unit — described as four to five times FBA's own $0.08 base increase — while orders of 3+ units in the small and large standard tiers were spared.
- A 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge applies to US MCF fulfillment fees from May 2, 2026, per Amazon — the same mechanism our fuel surcharge guide covers on the FBA side. Holiday peak fees run October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, at $0.35–$1.00 per unit by size, with the 3.5% applied on top.
- There is no referral fee on MCF orders — which saves the 8–15% referral fee an equivalent Amazon marketplace sale would carry — but comparable MCF fulfillment will run 30–50% above FBA rates.
- Unbranded packaging is default and free, but unavailable for items over 56 inches on the longest side or heavier than 49.9 lb, and Walmart orders specifically require it plus blocking Amazon Logistics as the carrier.
Your Shopify order can ship from the same shelf as your Amazon order, and since January it costs $0.35 to $0.41 more per single unit to do so. If you sell anywhere besides Amazon and your stock already lives in FBA, MCF is the path of least resistance: one inventory pool, no second warehouse relationship, and on-time delivery of about 97% on two speed tiers — standard at 3 business days, expedited at 2. This guide is the fee side of the second-channel decision; whether to have a second channel at all is that guide’s question.
01How the pricing works
MCF pricing is per-unit and all-inclusive of pick, pack and ship, with four variables: size tier, shipping weight, units per order, and delivery speed. No monthly subscription, no setup fee — you pay per unit fulfilled.
Two structural discounts are:
| Program | Terms |
|---|---|
| Multi-unit orders | Up to 50% off per-unit fees on multi-unit orders |
| MCF Preferred Pricing (2026) | Up to 15% off for eligible sellers, capped at 100,000 MCF units or 12 months from enrollment, whichever comes first |
The multi-unit discount is not a footnote. It means MCF’s economics look very different for a store whose average order contains three units than for one shipping singles — and as the next section shows, the January increase drew exactly that line.
02What changed in January, and again in May
Amazon raised MCF rates on January 15, 2026. The shape of the increase, per the MCF rate card:
- Most single-unit orders up $0.35–$0.41 per unit — characterised in reporting as four to five times the $0.08 average base increase FBA itself took, with the overall MCF average put around $0.30 per unit.
- No increase for orders of 3 or more units in the small and large standard-size tiers.
Then from May 2, 2026, Amazon applied a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge to US MCF fulfillment fees — its stated framing being that elevated costs had been absorbed until then, and that like other carriers it recovers a portion through temporary surcharges. This is the same mechanism, at the same rate, as the FBA-side surcharge our fuel and logistics guide covers.
And for Q4: holiday peak fulfillment fees run October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, per Amazon, with the same per-unit increases as the prior year — at $0.35 per unit for small standard, scaling to $1.00 for extra-large — and the 3.5% surcharge applied on top. The FBA side of that story is in our holiday peak guide; if MCF is part of your Q4 plan, both stacks apply to you at once.

03The referral-fee wrinkle that flatters MCF
One line makes MCF look better than a raw rate comparison suggests: MCF orders carry no referral fee. The sale happened on your Shopify store; Amazon only fulfilled it. this as saving the 8–15% an equivalent marketplace sale would surrender — which partially offsets the same reporting’s finding that comparable MCF fulfillment runs 30–50% above FBA rates, and often above dedicated 3PL rates, particularly past 3 lb.
A published head-to-head makes the ambiguity concrete: one 2026 comparison puts a sample item at $5.70 MCF fulfillment + 3.5% surcharge ≈ $5.90, against $7.00 at a 3PL ($2.75 pick/pack + $4.25 shipping). MCF wins that row — and the same source immediately argues the row is not the whole story, which is the next section.
04What MCF will not do
The constraints are where multi-channel brands hit the wall:
- Your box is a plain box. Unbranded packaging is the default at no extra cost — plain materials, no Amazon branding, but no your branding either. No custom boxes, tissue, inserts or thank-you cards. For DTC brands whose unboxing drives repeat purchase, reporting calls this a dealbreaker.
- Unbranded has size limits. Per Amazon, items over 56 inches on the longest side or 49.9 lb are not supported by the unbranded option.
- Returns and customer service stay with you. MCF fulfils; it does not absorb the aftermath. Your returns economics are still your own — the same arithmetic as our returns cost guide.
- Channel rules apply. eBay use is workable with generic packaging and a non-Amazon last-mile carrier. Walmart has allowed MCF since May 2025 with three conditions: unbranded packaging, Amazon Logistics blocked as carrier, and specified shipping windows — with Walmart’s 5% surcharge reported waived through 2027.
05What to do
Price your actual basket, not a sample unit. The January increase and the multi-unit discount together mean the answer flips with units per order: a singles-heavy store took the full increase; a 3+ unit basket in standard tiers took none and gets up to half off. Run your real order profile through Amazon’s MCF calculator — noting Amazon’s own caveat that it is a guide only.
Add the surcharges before comparing to a 3PL. The honest MCF number is the rate card plus 3.5%, and in Q4 plus the peak fee too. Reporting suggests dedicated 3PLs pull ahead for heavy items, specialty SKUs, and volumes past roughly 1,000–2,500 orders a month — and unlock branded packaging besides.
Decide what the plain box costs you. For a marketplace-led seller adding a side channel, nothing. For a brand whose Shopify store is the main act, the unboxing moment may be worth more than the fee delta.
Export one month of MCF orders and count how many were single units. That share, times $0.40, times 1.035, is what January and May added to your off-Amazon fulfillment — and the number that decides whether a 3PL conversation is worth having.
Frequently asked
Do MCF orders pay a referral fee?
No. The referral fee applies to sales made on Amazon's marketplace. MCF fulfils orders you sold elsewhere, which as saving the 8–15% referral fee an equivalent Amazon sale would carry.
Can I use MCF for Walmart Marketplace orders?
Yes, since May 2025 — with unbranded packaging required, Amazon Logistics blocked as the carrier, and specified shipping windows met. Walmart's 5% surcharge is waived through 2027.
Does the customer see Amazon branding?
Unbranded packaging is the default for MCF orders at no extra cost, per Amazon — no Amazon branding on boxes, tape or polybags. It is unavailable for items over 56 inches on the longest side or 49.9 lb, and custom branded packaging is not offered.
Is MCF cheaper than a 3PL?
It depends on the order profile. One 2026 comparison puts a sample unit at about $5.90 all-in via MCF against $7.00 at a 3PL — while reporting elsewhere puts comparable MCF 30–50% above FBA rates and notes 3PLs pull ahead for heavy items, high volumes and brands needing custom packaging.
Do peak season fees apply to MCF?
Yes. Per Amazon, holiday peak fees apply October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027 with the same per-unit increases as last year — at $0.35 to $1.00 per unit by size tier — and the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge applies on top.
