Amazon Renewed asks for $50,000 of invoices before it lets you sell one refurbished unit

The program is invoice-gated, defect-rate-gated and warranty-backed. For Apple items the invoice threshold is $2.5 million. It is not a route for clearing your own returns — it is a business you either already run or do not.

The figure this guide is about, drawn from the sources listed at the foot of the page.

Entry: $50,000 in invoices, ODR ≤ 0.8%

Key takeaways

  • Entry requires itemized invoices showing at least $50,000 in qualifying refurbished purchases in the previous 90 days — or 180 days for Home, Tools, Kitchen and Lawn & Garden.
  • Apple is the exception Amazon names on the program page: $2.5 million in Apple refurbished purchases in the previous 90 days. Agencies report similar gates for other brands; treat those as unconfirmed until the application tells you.
  • Order Defect Rate must be 0.8% or below — tighter than the 1% general threshold, and measured over a trailing 90 days.
  • Every unit carries the Amazon Renewed Guarantee, a 90-day minimum warranty that you fund and administer.
  • Ongoing standards are continuing: a Renewed Quality Score at or above 98%, and 1- and 2-star reviews below 10% of total reviews on renewed listings.

You have a pallet of returns and you want to sell it. Amazon Renewed is not the door. The entry requirements — $50,000 of refurbished purchase invoices in 90 days, an order defect rate under 0.8%, a warranty you fund — describe a refurbishing business, not a seller clearing stock.

01What it is

A program allowing approved sellers to offer pre-owned, refurbished and open-box products — mostly but not only electronics — under Amazon’s condition standards.

Condition grades: premium, excellent, good and acceptable. Products may have minor physical flaws such as scratches or marks and typically arrive without original packaging, but must be inspected, tested and cleaned to work like new.

Renewed Premium is a higher tier: 90% battery capacity against 80% for standard, and a one-year warranty rather than the standard 90-day guarantee.

02The entry requirements

Invoices. Itemized, showing a minimum total value of $50,000 in qualifying refurbished purchases in the previous 90 days — or 180 days for products related to Home, Tools, Kitchen or Lawn & Garden.

Amazon’s own program page specifies what those invoices must show: authentic and unaltered, a completed transaction, your full business name and address, the supplier’s full name and contact information, purchase quantity, and itemized brand and model information that can be validated online. Unit prices may be redacted.

That is a stricter version of the same document six other systems ask for — see the supplier invoice.

Brand-specific thresholds. Amazon’s program page names one: $2.5 million for Apple branded items in Consumer Electronics, in the previous 90 days. Agency guides describe comparable gates for Samsung wireless products; Amazon does not publish them, so treat them as an application-stage surprise rather than a planning number.

Order Defect Rate at 0.8% or below, over a trailing 90 days. is tighter than the general 1% threshold covered in the ODR guide.

Product and packaging images. A minimum of 8 images for factory-refurbished items without manufacturer warranty — the shipping box, internal packaging and padding, and the product from top, bottom and all four sides, with the screen on for electronics. One source reports 10 images for a sample unit generally.

Trademark documentation or Brand Registry enrollment if you are the manufacturer or brand owner.

Application is through Seller Central or by email to Amazon’s Renewed application address, with a response in about 10 to 12 business days.

03Who it is for

Amazon’s own page names the seller types: distributors and resellers, manufacturers and brand owners, brand-authorized refurbishers, refurbishers, repairers, and IT Asset Disposition providers.

Read that list against the invoice requirement and the shape becomes clear: the program is for businesses whose activity is refurbishment, not for sellers with a pallet of returns.

Which answers the question most sellers arrive with. If you have removal-order inventory or open-box units to clear, this is not the route — the removal guide covers liquidation, and the eBay guide covers the marketplace that takes used goods without an entry threshold.

04The obligations after approval

The Amazon Renewed Guarantee. Your company backs every refurbished product and is responsible for all claims under it. — a 90-day minimum warranty — a limited warranty under which a customer can obtain a free refund or replacement if the product does not work properly.

That is a real liability, funded and administered by you, on used goods, for ninety days.

Ongoing performance standards:

MetricRequirement
Order Defect Rate0.8% or below
Renewed Quality Score98% or above — fewer than 2% of orders with reported defects over 13 weeks
1- and 2-star reviewsBelow 10% of total reviews on renewed listings

The last one is unusual and worth noting: a review-composition standard, not just a defect standard. On used goods, where expectations vary, that is a demanding metric.

05The honest assessment

The case for it: a defined market for refurbished goods with a trust framework Amazon supplies, in categories where used inventory has real value.

The case against it, for most readers of this site: the entry threshold assumes you already operate at scale in refurbishment, the warranty is a genuine liability on used equipment, and the ongoing standards are tighter than the general marketplace ones — on a product category where returns and defects are structurally higher.

Where it makes sense: if refurbishment is your business, or if you are a brand owner wanting a controlled channel for your own returned and repaired units rather than liquidating them. That second case is the one most under-considered — a manufacturer refurbishing its own returns has the invoices, the trademark documentation and the technical capacity that the program asks for.

06What to do

Check the invoice position first. If you cannot produce $50,000 of itemized, validatable refurbished purchase invoices in the window, nothing else matters.

Check your ODR against 0.8%, not 1%. Many accounts that are comfortably healthy generally are not comfortable against this threshold.

Cost the warranty. Ninety days of refund-or-replacement liability on used goods, funded by you, belongs in the unit economics before the application.

Prepare the images properly. Eight to ten images of a sample unit and its packaging from every angle, with electronics powered on.

If you are a brand owner, consider it for your own returns — that is the case where you already hold most of what the program asks for.

If you are looking to clear returns you did not manufacture, look elsewhere. The threshold is the answer.

Do you have $50,000 of refurbished purchase invoices from the last 90 days sitting in a folder? If the answer is no, you have your answer about Renewed, and the removal guide is the page you actually need.

Frequently asked

What do I need to join Amazon Renewed?

Itemized invoices showing at least $50,000 in qualifying refurbished purchases in the previous 90 days — 180 days for Home, Tools, Kitchen and Lawn & Garden — an Order Defect Rate of 0.8% or below, sample product and packaging images, and agreement to back all units with the Amazon Renewed Guarantee.

Why is the Apple threshold so much higher?

Amazon's program page requires $2.5 million in Apple refurbished purchase invoices from the previous 90 days for the Consumer Electronics category. Agencies describe similar gates for Samsung wireless products; Amazon does not publish those, so plan on $100,000 for non-wireless Apple and Samsung items.

Can I use Renewed to clear my own returns?

Generally not, unless you are the brand owner or refurbisher. The invoice threshold assumes an existing refurbishment business. For clearing returned inventory, liquidation or a marketplace that accepts used goods without an entry threshold is the practical route.

What is the Amazon Renewed Guarantee?

A limited warranty, at a 90-day minimum, under which a customer can obtain a free refund or replacement if the product does not work properly. Your company backs it and is responsible for all claims.

What standards apply after approval?

An Order Defect Rate at or below 0.8%, a Renewed Quality Score at or above 98% — fewer than 2% of orders with reported defects over 13 weeks — and 1- and 2-star reviews below 10% of total reviews on renewed listings.

How long does approval take?

About 10 to 12 business days after applying through Seller Central or by email with the required documentation.
